This screening features The Piano Teacher, the acclaimed 2001 psychological drama by Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Haneke ), based on the novel of the same name by Austrian Nobel Prize-winning author Elfriede Jelinek. ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elfriede_Jelinek )\nAbout the Film\nHaneke’s internationally acclaimed film is set against the cultural backdrop of Vienna and follows Erika Kohut, a gifted but emotionally repressed piano professor at the Vienna Conservatory. When one of her students enters her life, their increasingly fraught relationship exposes the tensions between desire, power, control, and intimacy. The Piano Teacher was awarded the Grand Prix at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, where both lead performers also received acting prizes. More than two decades after its release, the film remains one of the defining works of contemporary Austrian cinema.\nAbout the Filmklub\nThe Frederic Morton Library Filmklub is a screening series exclusively for members of the Austrian Cultural Forum New York’s library.
