SUMMARY:Frederic Morton Library Filmklub: Three Days
DESCRIPTION:November 6, 2026 | 7 PM (6.30 PM Doors)\nRESERVE YOUR SPOT HERE (EXCLUSIVE TO FREDERIC MORTON LIBRARY MEMBERS)\nJoin us for the Frederic Morton Library ( https://acfny.org/library/ ) Filmklub, a screening series dedicated to Austrian film and its many connections to literature, history, and culture. This screening features Three Days (1970), an intimate, made-for-TV portrait of Austrian writer Thomas Bernhard ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Bernhard ), directed by Ferry Radax. The event is presented in collaboration with the Brooklyn Institute for Social Research ( https://thebrooklyninstitute.com/items/courses/new-york/thomas-bernhard-the-arts-trilogy/ ), whose course on Bernhard’s work brings together readers interested in one of Austria’s most important postwar writers. Lauren K. Wolfe, who teaches the course, will introduce the film and lead a post-screening discussion.\nLauren K. Wolfe ( https://thebrooklyninstitute.com/people/lauren-k-wolfe/ ) is a Brooklyn-based translator, editor, and educator who teaches courses in literature and cultural history at the Brooklyn Institute for Social Research. She is a founding editor of Barricade—A Journal of Antifascism and Translation, which publishes political literature from around the world. Her translations have been published or are forthcoming from Dalkey Archive Press, the University of Minnesota Press, MIT Press, Review of Contemporary Fiction, Grey Room, Asymptote, Hard Pack, and elsewhere.\nAbout the Film\n“A spare portrait of the artist, delivered in the artist’s own style. Filmed over three days, a solitary Bernhard, seated on a park bench, holds forth on his aesthetic education, literary and philosophical preoccupations, and his grim outlook on the writing life—while the camera zooms in, cuts to black, pushes the subject out of frame, then redoubles it, creating a mise-en-abyme from which the monologue carries on. Produced on the eve of a decade that would see the publication of Bernhard’s memoirs in five installments and a series of increasingly autobiographical fictions, Ferry Radax’s 1970 documentary offers an early, candid glimpse into the mind of a famously reclusive and dissimulating writer.” – Lauren K. Wolfe\nAbout the Filmklub\nThe Frederic Morton Library Filmklub is a screening series exclusively for members of the Austrian Cultural Forum New York’s library.
