SUMMARY:Mahler in New York: Film-Screening & Talk with Emmy Award-winning Director Hilan Warshaw
DESCRIPTION:Image: Overtone Films\nDecember 1, 2026 | 6:30 PM\nTICKETS AVAILABLE IN DUE COURSE\nJoin us at the Austrian Cultural Forum New York for a screening of Mahler in New York, an acclaimed feature documentary by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Hilan Warshaw ( https://www.instagram.com/hilan_warshaw_films/ ). The film explores the final years of Austrian composer and conductor Gustav Mahler ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gustav_Mahler ), whose time in New York transformed both his personal life and the city’s musical landscape. As he led the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera, Mahler discovered a new world far from Vienna, finding inspiration in New York’s pluralism while confronting personal tragedy and the shadow of impending death.\nAbout the Film\nMahler in New York recreates the little-known Manhattan sojourn of Gustav Mahler through performances, location footage, re-enactments, and interviews with musical luminaries. Fleeing Viennese anti-Semitism and personal tragedy, Mahler found a sense of belonging in New York, which he described as a “spiritual home.” During his final years, he worked on his last symphonies and reshaped the city’s musical life through his leadership of the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera.\nThe film also explores Mahler’s complex relationship with his wife, Alma, and the enduring legacy of his music. Following his death, American composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein — often regarded as Mahler’s spiritual heir — and others helped revive and popularize his work for a new generation. Combining a portrait of a major European composer with a moving love story, Mahler in New York reflects on Mahler’s music, his legacy, and its relevance today.\nThe screening will be followed by a discussion with the film’s director, Hilan Warshaw.\nAbout the Filmmaker\nHilan Warshaw is an Emmy Award-winning film director and writer whose internationally broadcast documentaries explore music, history, and the arts. His films include Wagner’s Jews (WDR/ARTE, PBS-WNET), Secret Song featuring opera star Renée Fleming, Through the Darkness, My Boléro (2024 Southeast Emmy Award winner for Best Arts/Entertainment Long Form), In the Key of Bach, and Mahler in New York. His work has been broadcast by PBS, ORF, SVT, YLE, Deutsche Welle, and other international networks.\nA trained violinist and orchestral conductor, Warshaw has directed multi-camera concert captures for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, The Cleveland Orchestra, and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. He is a LABA NYC Arts and Hermitage Arts Fellow and has served as an Emmy voter. He holds B.F.A. and M.F.A. degrees from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and studied conducting at Mannes College of Music. Image Credit: ACMP\n
