DESCRIPTION:\nElias Meiri brings together the opera singer Shira Karmon and his daughter Jasmin Meiri, a Chansonnière. With “Songs in Yiddish” they playfully reflect on their Eastern European origins. Don’t miss the joy and sparkle and the virtuoso Klezmer interludes on piano by Elias. This event is made possible by the joint efforts of the City of Vienna, the Austrian General Consulate NY, the Austrian Cultural Forum New York, and especially, Milli Segal and Waltraud Dennhardt-Herzog.\nABOUT THE ARTISTS\nBorn in Israel, Elias Meiri begins to take piano lessons at the age of five. Mostly due to his absolute pitch, he masters the art of improvisation at an early age. He attends the Talma-Yalin Conservatory in Tel Aviv and completes his studies at the Berkeley College of Music in Boston. In New York, he plays with jazz stars like Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Liebman and Steve Großman. In addition to performances with Timna Brauer, he plays solo concerts and with his various line-ups. He teaches piano, vocal performance, ear training and jazz-improvisation and dedicates himself to composition, the production of CDs and sound technique.\nThe Soprano Shira Karmon, praised by critics for her strong and expressive voice, studied at the Rubin Academy in Tel Aviv (now Buchman Metha Institut) and at the Manhattan School of Music (NYC). Her first job brought her to Germany, where she sang at the state theater Saarbrücken, the Komische Oper Berlin, the chamber opera Hamburg, the International Opera Festival Gut Immling and the Landestheater Niederbayern. Throughout Europe, Karmon performed at the Aberdeen Festivals (Scotland), the national opera house de Rhin in Straßburg (France), and at the Verbier Festival (Switzerland). She appeared in the roles of Mimi in La Bohème, the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro, Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, Fiordiligi in Cosi fan tutte and Guiletta in the Tales of Hoffmann. As a renowned concert singer Karmon appeared at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Berlin concert hall, the Lincoln Center New York, the Mar del Plata and Bahia Blanca in Argentina, the Villa Medici in Rome and the European Weeks in Passau. The Jerusalem radio station Kol Hamsuica presented a two-hour feature on Karmon’s work and furthermore, she sang the Soprano Solo of Strwainski’s Les Noces and Beethoven’s choral fantasy at the Opening Gala of the 40th International Arthus Rubinstein Piano Competition in Tel Aviv. She worked with well-known directors such as Giancarlo des Monaco, John Cox, Federico Davia and conductors like Stuart Bedford, Bruno Rigacci, Hiroaki Masuda, Heiko M. Förster und Jeanpierre Faber. Shira Karmon has received an award at the competition Lied des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts organized by the Kulturkreis der deutschen Wirtschaft.\nJasmin Meiri is the daughter of Elias Meiri and Timna Brauer and a student of vocal performance at the Private Conservatory Vienna.\nThe Old American Can Factory operates out of a 130,000 GSF, industrial complex of six interconnected buildings built between 1885 and 1910 on the Gowanus Canal’s Fith Street Basin. In 2003, XOP began developing the complex as a workplace dedicated to the arts, culture and light manufacturing.
