DESCRIPTION:\nThey are the last survivors and witnesses. They speak up and tell us their stories. Stories about how they escaped and survived the Holocaust. How much longer will we be able to listen to their testimonies?\nOver 75 years after the Shoah seven survivors share their terrible experiences and stories about colleagues who turned into robbers, neighbors into murderers, and friends into traitors. Together with ensemble members of Vienna’s Burgtheater these Last Witnesses bring their memories back on stage.\nProduced and directed by former Burgtheater Director Matthias Hartmann and the acclaimed Israeli-Austrian writer Doron Rabinovici, the original Burgtheater performance will be presented in a special screening of the 2013 recording. The subtitled screening of the first 30 minutes of the film will be followed by a talk with Ari Rath, one of the protagonists, and writer Doron Rabinovici. After the 1938-Anschluss he came as a thirteen-year-old Boy through the Youth Aliah to Palestine. As one of the founders of the kibbutz Hamadia he studied contemporary history and economics. After turning to journalism he became editor and editor-in-chief of the Jerusalem Post. At the age of 91, he continues to be active as a journalist and author, as well as promoter of dialogue between cultures and civilizations. He lives in Vienna and Jerusalem.\nABOUT DORON RABINOVICI\nDoron Rabinovici was born in Tel Aviv in 1961. He lives in Vienna since 1964. He is a historian, public intellectual and award-winning writer. His numerous awards include the Jean-Amery Prize, the Anton Wildgans Prize, the Clemens Brentano Prize, the Heimito von Doderer Prize, and many others. His novel “Anderswo” which was nominated and shortlisted for the German Book Prize, has been published as “Elsewhere” (House Publishing, translation by Tess Lewis).\nMore information about Doron Rabinovici on www.rabinovici.at and www.facebook.com/pages/Doron-Rabinovici/102114042347.\nABOUT PETER MARKS\nPeter Marks has been chief theater critic of The Washington Post since 2002. Prior to that, he was a theater critic and national political correspondent for The New York Times. He is the author of numerous magazine articles and co-writer with the late Bob Benmosche of the 2016 memoir, “Good For the Money: My Fight to Pay Back America.” A graduate of Yale, he has chaired the Pulitzer Prize jury for drama four times, and as a reporter at Newsday, was a member of a team that won the 1992 Pulitzer Prize for spot news reporting.\nSupported by\nAustrian Consulate General New York\n\n\n\n\n
