DESCRIPTION:\nSIGNAL is proud to present Autokorrekt, an exhibition of new sculpture by Sophie Hirsch, and the artist’s first solo presentation in New York.\nAutokorrekt sees Hirsch expanding upon a sculptural practice that has long focused on the wedding of organic forms and synthetic materials, with particular attention to the sensual qualities of tension and texture. In a representative work milky polycarbonate sheets are rubber-strapped or tacked against a wall with PVC piping, bowing out against their own weight, and draped in bubbling black silicon. These densely layered sculptures, comprised of functional manufacturing materials and scaled at human-size, give the impression both of being viscerally biological and brutally alien-like glimpsing the inner workings of a beehive or animal carcass.\nBIOGRAPHICAL NOTES\nSophie Hirsch was born in 1986 in Vienna, Austria. She attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and received her MFA from the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Her work has been exhibited internationally in numerous group and solo exhibitions, including The Last Brucennial (New York, 2014); Newd Art Show (New York, 2014); Heut schau ich mir schöne Bilder an damit ich besser schlafen kann (Solo, Projektraum Viktor Bucher, 2013); Kijang Kijangan (Solo, Yogyakarta, Java 2012); and wünschen erwünscht, handeln verlangt (Project Space Kunsthalle Wien, Wien 2012).
