SUMMARY:ACFNY RECOMMENDS | PERFORMANCE | ROBERTA LIMA: DISPLACEMENT
DESCRIPTION:Displacement refers to Brazilian artist Roberta Lima’s ongoing process of interweaving her experiences as an architect and as a performer. As an architect she was trained to provide safety and the idea of shelter, and as a performer she was given the chance to experiment with the opposite: the idea of instability. Lima touches on many themes such as gender and bio-politics, and makes use of different elements to debate the concept of displacement.\nThis one-night-only performance and installation at New York’s White Box was curated by Lara Pan, and will include a talk by Austrian curator and art historian Felicitas Thun-Hohenstein\nABOUT THE ARTIST\nRoberta Lima was born in 1974 in Manaus, Brazil. After graduating with a degree in architecture in 2002, she moved to Europe where she now lives. In 2007, after earning a Master’s degree in Fine Arts, she began her PhD studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Lima focuses on her own body and uses various media, such as photographs, video and installations. Additionally, she investigates space and appropriates aspects of different places and contexts – from subculture to science, from popular media to historical reference and feminist theory – for producing art and starting discussions on the role of artist and viewer. In 2008, she collaborated with Dorit Margreiter on “SynChroniCity”, the Austrian contribution at the 11th International Cairo Biennal, which was curated by Felicitas Thun-Hohenstein.\nFor more information, please visit: www.robertalima.com\n \nVENUE\nWhite Box\n329 Broome Street\nNew York, NY 10002\nhttp://www.whiteboxny.org/\n
