Complexly structured to shift between the past and present, between scenes from life and scenes from a novel, The Holy Bunch simultaneously constructs and deconstructs the role of art in the group members’ lives and its relationship to the human spirit.\nThe Basis of Make-Up I\nDirected by Heinz Emigholz\n1974-83, 20 minutes, 35mm, silent\nThe films in the Basis of Make-Up series constitute a compendium of Emigholz’s drawings and writings. “[These films] are at the center of what my feature films revolve around. I imagine them as an intermezzo between the long films, the database as an interlude. The paradoxical nature of film is taken to an extreme: giving something that is taken away immediately.” – Heinz Emigholz\n \nIn conjunction with an exhibition at the Goethe-Institut New York entitled The Formative Years, featuring seven early films by German filmmaker Heinz Emigholz in a site-specific video installation, the Anthology Film Archives presents seven programs surveying Emigholz’s later work, including most of the films in the Photography and Beyond series, along with the feature film The Holy Bunch. The exhibition (co-organized by the Arsenal – Institute for Film and video Art, Berlin) will take place at the Goethe-Institut’s Wyoming Building.\nHeinz Emigholz, born in 1948 near Bremen, worked as an illustrator and retoucher, and later founded his own film company, Pym Films, in 1978. Since 1984, Emigholz has produced the acclaimed series of documentaries entitled Architecture as Autobiography. Exploiting a minimalist and experimental style that disavows voice-over commentary or master shots, his ever-expanding project creates a pure and detailed picture of the realm of creative spaces. Emigholz’s films provide viewers with thorough insights into the works of architectural luminaries such as Rudolf Schindler, Adolf Loos, Bruce Goff, or Louis Sullivan.\n \n“Emigholz’s architecture films are not the kind of historical/aesthetic information overviews one might expect […].
