SUMMARY:ACFNY RECOMMENDED | PANEL DISCUSSION | CAN MOTHERS STOP TERRORISM?
DESCRIPTION:For the first time, Aicha el-Wafi, the mother of Zacarias Moussaoui (the only person ever to be tried in a US court on charges of having been involved in the September 11 attacks), will meet with Abdul Haqq Baker, the former Imam of the Brixton Mosque in London, which Zacarias attended while he became radicalized.\nThis conversation will provide Aicha with the opportunity to ask questions of one of the men who watched her son’s descent into extremism, and to seek answers to “what went wrong.” They both want to send a strong message to mothers around the world that they can and should be the first line of defense against the ideologies of violent extremism.\n\nThe event will be moderated by Edit Schlaffer, Executive Director of Women without Borders/ SAVE-Sisters Against Violent Extremism, with an introduction by Pat Mitchell, CEO of The Paley Center for Media.\n\nABOUT THE PANELISTS\nAicha el-Wafi, originally from Marocco, now a French citizen living in Narbonne, is the mother of Zacarias Moussaoui. She has become an advocate of forgiveness and reconciliation (see: http://eloquentwoman.blogspot.com/2011/05/famous-speech-friday-phyllis-rodriguez.html) and an activist on behalf of Muslim women.\nAbdul Haqq Baker was Chairman of the Brixton Mosque from 1994 to 2009. Brixton Mosque was the focus of much media attention due to the attendance of individuals lured away into extremism and attempted terrorist actions. In 2007 he began a Muslim youth initiative called the Strategy To Reach Empower & Educate Teenagers (STREET) which targets Muslim youth considered susceptible to violent extremist propaganda. He is currently a Lecturer in Terrorism studies at the University of St. Andrews.\nEdit Schlaffer (pictured) is an Austrian social scientist, author and activist and founded the initiative “Women without Borders”.\n \nVENUE\nThe Paley Center for Media\n25 W. 52nd Street, NY 10019\n10th Floor, Kissinger Global Conference Room\n\nFor tickets, please visit http://www.paleycenter.org/2011-fall-can-mothers-stop-terrorism/\n
