DESCRIPTION:\nCELEBRATION OF ACF TRANSLATION PRIZE 2009\nFollowed by a reception by the new Austrian eatery KINSKY.\nThe Austrian Cultural Forum New York is pleased to invite you to an evening of celebration dedicated to Austrian literature in translation.\nFatima Naqvi (Rutgers University) and Michael Orthofer (The Literary Saloon) will present the two winning teams of this year’s ACF Translation Prize:\nJean Snook, associate professor of German at Memorial University of Newfoundland, was selected for her translation of Gert Jonke’s Der Ferne Klang (The Distant Sound.) It is set for publication by Dalkey Archive Press in Spring 2010.\nUljana Wolf and Christian Hawkey, the team of poets, were selected for their translation of a collection of Ilse Aichinger short stories.\nRenowned critic Daniela Strigl from Vienna will engage the two winning teams in a conversation on literature in translation, followed by a short reading of the winning texts.\nThe trophies of the winners will be sponsored by SWAROVSKI and handed over by Caro Llewellyn, PEN World Voices Festival Director.\nGert Jonke (1946-2009) was a prolific writer of both prose and drama, and a major player on the European literary scene. His experimental and humorous use of language, combined with incisive criticism in a kindly tone, is also evident in his 1979 novel Der ferne Klang (The Distant Sound).\nBad Words (Fischer Verlag) is a collection of short prose works by Ilse Aichinger (born 1921), one of the most important writers in postwar Austrian and German literature. This ambitious collection represents a large selection of her ground-breaking texts from the 1960s to the 1980s, most of which have never before been translated into English.\nThe ACF Translation Prize supports translations of contemporary Austrian fiction, poetry, and drama that have preferably not appeared previously in English with a grant of 3.000 €. The award will be disbursed upon the formal acceptance of the manuscript by a publishing house, which must occur within a period of three years.\nIn collaboration with the Dietrich W.
