Taking German to the Twittersphere: The global social media phenomenon that is Nein.Quarterly (twitter.com/NeinQuarterly) aka Eric Jarosinski will talk about his work at Deutsches Haus at NYU with photographer and author Ben Schott (Schottenfreude, www.benschott.com). The event will be moderated by writer/translator Tim Mohr.

ABOUT THE PARTICIPANTS

Ben Schott is the bestselling author of the Schott’s Original Miscellany and Schott’s Almanac series. His most recent book is Schottenfreude— which contains 120 new German words to describe inexpressible moments of human existence: from “kicking through piles of fall leaves” and “reassuring your hairdresser” to the “lingering sensation of a first kiss” and the “ineffable pleasure of a cool pillow.” Together these books have sold some 2.5 million copies, and have been translated into 21 languages (including Braille). Born in London in 1974, Ben was educated at University College School, Hampstead, and Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge where he read Social & Political Sciences. He graduated in 1996, taking a double First. After a fleeting career at the advertising agency J. Walter Thompson, Ben spent seven years as a professional photographer. He is now a contributing columnist to The New York Times, and writes for a variety of other publications. Ben divides his time between New York and London, and unexpectedly speaks no German.

Eric Jarosinski teaches modern German literature, culture, and critical theory at the University of Pennsylvania. He has found his true calling, however, as the writer/editor of @NeinQuarterly, a “Compendium of Utopian Negation” on Twitter. With a focus on German philosophy, language, literature, and culture, @NeinQuarterly has met with critical acclaim and garnered a broad international following. Jarosinski is currently preparing his exit from the academy to embark upon a new career as an aphorist, #failedintellectual, and cultural critic at large. His eagerly anticipated blog – neinquarterly.com – will be launching soon, and he is currently at work on a series of books collecting his aphorisms on the German language, philosophy, literature, social media, depression and anxiety, and love.

Tim Mohr is a New York-based translator, writer, and editor. He has translated the German novels Guantanamo, by Dorothea Dieckmann (published in the U.S. by Soft Skull and in the U.K. by Duckworth), Wetlands, by Charlotte Roche (published in the U.S. by Grove/Atlantic and in the U.K. by 4th Estate), and Broken Glass Park and The Hottest Dishes of the Tartar Cuisine, both by Alina Bronsky (both published worldwide by Europa Editions).Guantanamo was the recipient of the Three Percent award for best translation of 2007. The Hottest Dishes was named to Publishers Weekly’s Best Books of 2011 list  and the Los Angeles Public Library’s Best Books of 2011, and nominated for the 2013 IMPAC Dublin literary award.
