Join us for an event focused on Austrian German in literature and translation on the occasion of German Language Day at the United Nations.
Since 2021 the German Translation Section (GTS) has been celebrating German Language Day at the United Nations around July 1 to promote the role of German in the UN context and the culture of the German-speaking Member States of the UN. The date commemorates GTS taking up operations at UN Headquarters in New York on July 1, 1975. The event is part of the “language days” series, an initiative launched by the Secretary-General in 2010 to promote multilingualism at the UN. German Language Day at the UN is organized in collaboration with the diplomatic missions of the German-speaking UN Member States and renowned cultural institutions in New York City.
We are pleased to present a reading by Austrian writer Daniela Emminger and her translator, Alta L. Price. In a premiere and sneak preview, she will present chapters of her new and as yet unpublished book ”Blood is Not Thicker than Water“ translated into English. Join us for a journey through this crime story that will lead the audience from New York City to a pig farm in Austria. The reading will be followed by a conversation with Alta L. Price, in which author and translator will discuss the joys and challenges of translating Austrian dialect into English, and more.

About the Participants
Daniela Emminger was born in Upper Austria in 1975. After studying communication science, she worked as a copywriter, gallery employee and editor for several years. Her publications include the novel “Gemischter Satz” (Czernin Verlag, 2016), for which she was nominated for the Austrian Book Prize, and the novel “Kafka mit Flügeln” (Czernin Verlag, 2018). Daniela Emminger has received numerous literary scholarships. Furthermore, in 2020, she was writer-in-residence at the Deutsches Haus at New York University.
Alta L. Price runs a publishing consultancy specialized in literature and nonfiction texts on art, architecture, design, and culture. Of the more than 40 books Alta has translated from Italian and German, Juli Zeh’s “New Year” was a finalist for both the 2022 PEN America Translation Prize and the Helen & Kurt Wolff Translator’s Prize. FREE GERMAN CLASSES
In celebration of German Language Day at the UN, Deutsches Haus at NYU is partnering with the German Translation Section at the United Nations to present a variety of free online German courses on July 2.
To sign up for one of these free classes, please email Tanja Schmitz and let her know which class you’d like to sign up for. The deadline to enroll in these classes is noon on Monday, July 1, 2024. Any requests to join after that time will not be accommodated.
The available classes are as follows:
Beginner (A1 and A2) Class Tuesday, July 2, from 1-1:30 PM
Intermediate (B1 and B2) Class Tuesday, July 2, from 2-2:30 PM
Advanced (C1 and C2) Class Tuesday, July 2, from 3-3:30 PM
All three classes will be taught by Eric Jarosinski.
