Join us for a concert by Viennese DJ and artist Seba Kayan and dance music artist Chaia.

About the Concert

CARPET CONCERT is an idea and space, to create sounds, music and new unthought spaces beyond the Western knowledge and cosmology. The event series founded by Seba Kayan, tries to combine the occidental and the oriental world in a new identity and hybridity. In her live sets Seba Kayan combines traditional instruments from the so called “Orient”, to transform the genres. Well aware of the polemics of the expression “Orient” or “Carpet Concert”, she does not use this expression affirmatively, but rather descriptively. As a provocative impulse to open discourses, to deconstruct projected identities in the musical process.

In this edition Seba will be in an intercultural dialogue with Chaia.

About the Artists

Seba Kayan is a Viennese DJ and artist. Her work oscillates between DJing, performances, exhibitions and curating. Her music has a forensic, political and metaphorical approach. By digging into various music archives she collects lost pieces. Her polyrhythmic sets integrate a wide array of musical genres, including Orientalfuturistic electro, techno and Acid. In between, she burns the unmistakable sound of the so called “Oriental” Music into ironclad techno frameworks. A binary vision of an occidental vs. oriental world is not aimed to be created, but both cultures are tried to be embodied and become interwoven. By seeking the past in archives, an imagination of tomorrow is getting shaped into a hybrid music. Acquiring ascriptions and deconstructing them in the musical process, as a collective improvisation process is an ongoing process for her. This method of relating to the ancestors, to a collective memory, tells also an a-linear historical narrative.

Chaia is a dance music artist who combines house and techno grooves with klezmer and Yiddish music. With electric fiddle grooves, archival samples, and club sounds, Chaia inspires new visions of Jewish diasporic identity. Chaia has been featured on NPR, the NAMM Show, Grammy.com, and at over a dozen Jewish music festivals around the world. Her work has been supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, the Brooklyn Arts Council, Combined Jewish Philanthropies, and the Jewish Museum of Maryland. In 2023, Chaia was awarded the Studio 170 Award from the Goethe Institut for her work with visual artist Dan Tombs and sound engineer Russell Elevado. Chaia’s debut album, Yibaneh will be released in Winter of 2024.
