About the Event

Though primarily known as a symphonic composer, Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) also enjoyed a distinguished career as an organist. In honor of the 200th anniversary of Bruckner’s birth, University of Vienna organ professor Johannes Ebenbauer presents a recital of the composer’s music for organ, both original and in transcription, as well as other organ pieces and improvisations in the spirit of Bruckner.

About Johannes Ebenbauer

Johannes Ebenbauer studied Church Music (organ, conducting, singing, composition) at the Graz University of Music and Organ Performance at the University of Music and performing Arts Vienna. From 1985 music assistant at Vienna’s St. Stephen’s Cathedral (under Director of Music Peter Planyavsky), from 1991 to 2005 Domkapellmeister (Director of Cathedral Music) at St. Stephen’s. Responsibilities and activities there: artistic and organizational direction of all ensembles (Kantorei, Vocalensemble, Cappella Albertina, Cathedral Choir, soloist ensembles, Choralschola, Cathedral Orchestra, Baroque Orchestra J.J.Fux) at the cathedral as well as playing Organ in liturgy and concerts; cooperations with ORF broadcasting and television – from 1998 live broadcasts on Radio Klassik Stephansdom every Sunday. Since 2002 teaching at the University for Music and performing Arts in Vienna, 2013 he was appointet to a professorship for Organ and Improvisation, in 2020 he was commissioned to head the Institute of Organ, Organ research and Church Music. Since 2010 Organist at the Vienna’s Franziscan Church with performings at and artistic responsibility of the Wöckherl-Organ from 1642. Organ concerts, masterclasses, performings of his compositions, conductings at the Wiener Hofmusikkapelle and publishing CDs complete his artistic activities. Image: Ebenbauer
