Directed by Daniel Moshel

The Austrian Cultural Forum is pleased to recommend the screening of the Austrian short film MeTube: August sings Carmen “Habanera”, at this year’s Sundance Film Festival as part of the Shorts Competition. Besides being part of the Sundance Film Festival 2014 Official Selection, the film has received the Animago Award, the Paris IMVF Grand Prix & Berlin Music Video Awards: Grand Prix, Best Concept, and the German Webvideo Award for Best Film.

MeTube, a homage to thousands of ambitious YouTube users and video bloggers, gifted and less gifted self-promoters on the Internet, has attracted international attention. No less than George Bizet’s Habanera from „Carmen” has been reinterpreted for MeTube and enhanced with electronic sounds. Behind the cross-over of musical styles are director Daniel Moshel as well as opera and oratorio tenor August Schram.

Vienna-based director Daniel Moshel was born in 1976 in Offenbach am Main, Germany. During his multimedia studies, he directed the short film komA. In 2003, he founded the production company Moshel Film. In 2009, he produced the short film Der Doppelgänger, which was directed by Stephanie Winter. The film won the Excellence Award at the Busan International Short Film Festival. Login 2 Life (2011) was his first feature-length documentary. MeTube: August Sings Carmen “Habanera” is his first music video.

The unamplified voice and its creative use in opera, oratorio, film and theatre characterise August Schram’s artistic creations. The tenor trained in Berlin, Rostock and New York under Christiane Bach-Röhr and Neil Semer, lives for classical art forms and has a weakness for new media. Hence his dedication to commitments at the opera houses of Giessen, Mainz, Darmstadt and Freiberg in Saxony, oratorio concerts i.e. with Ton Koopman, Helmuth Rilling and Bernhard Gfrerer, and his search for the present-day relevance of classical singing and contemporary modes of artistic expression.

The director’s travel to Park City is made possible in part through funding from the Austrian Consulate General in Los Angeles, and the Austrian Cultural Forum New York.
