The Hugo Kauder Trio was founded in 2008 by Ivan Danko, solo oboist of the State Opera in Stuttgart and winner of the International Hugo Kauder Competition in New Haven in 2009. His idea to establish an ensemble with this unique combination of instruments originated while performing with the violist Róbert Lakatos and the pianist Ladislav Fanzowitz. The combination of oboe, viola and piano creates an interesting sound alternative to the typical piano trio and opens up an exceptional and innovative repertoire. In their search for suitable repertoire, the members of the trio discovered the musical legacy of the composer Hugo Kauder (1888 – 1972). Kauder was born in Tovačov (Czech Republic) and belonged to the generation of persecuted and expelled Jewish artists of the 20th century. His origin, above all his late-Romantic, today practically unknown compositions containing Central European folk music elements, inspired the ensemble to call themselves the Hugo Kauder Trio. In an attempt to unveil these works
which, up to now, have had no chance of success on stage, the Hugo Kauder Trio is exploring other works by persecuted composers and unknown authors of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Ivan Danko studied at the „Hochschule für Musik und Theater“ in Munich with Prof. Günther Passin. In 2001 he was appointed as 1st solo oboe of the State Opera in Stuttgart and regularly peforms with leading orchestras like the Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin, Bamberger Symphonikern, Münchener Kammerorchester and the Württembergisches Kammerorchester Heilbronn. From 2005 – 2009 he was also solo oboist of the Solistes Européens Luxembourg orchestra. In 2008 he recorded his debut CD (Slovak Radio Records) with the pianist Ladislav Fanzowitz to international critical acclaim. In September 2009 he was the winner of the International Hugo Kauder Competition in New Haven (USA), where he enthralled the public with his performance of the world premiere of Kauder´s Concerto for oboe and string orchestra (1926). In 2009 the University of Musical Art in Bratislava awarded him the title „artis doctor“.
Róbert Lakatos is a graduate of the University of Musical Art in Bratislava. From 1997 – 2003 he was a member of the Slovak Philharmonic and for the past ten years has been Assistant Concertmaster of the viola section of the Solistes Européens Luxembourg orchestra. He is an internationally acclaimed soloist and chamber musician, his concerts with Julian Rachlin belonging among his most important: they performed J.S. Bach´s 6th Brandenburg Concerto with the Pressburger Philharmoniker at the UNO in New York and undertook a concert tour with the Solistés Europeéns Luxembourg. Apart from serious music, Róbert Lakatos has a passion for Hungarian folk music. He has established himself successfully in crossover projects with his own ensemble „Rév“, with whom he has released 2 CD´s. As leader of the project „Csillagok, Csillagok…“ Lakatos unites leading personalities from Hungarian folklore, jazz and serious music. „Csillagok, Csillagok…“ had its premiere in 2006 in the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall in Budapest.
Ladislav Fanzowitz completed his music studies at the State Conservatorium in Bratislava as “Graduate of the Year” in 2000. He continued his studies at the Academy of Musical Art in Prague, the „Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst“ in Vienna and the University of Musical Art in Bratislava. He supplemented his studies by attending master classes with artistic personalities like Jan Wijn, Abbey Simon, Gyorg Sándor, Karl Heinz Kämmerling and Mikhail Voskresensky. He was a finalist and winner in various competitions: the F. Chopin International Piano Competition in Mariánske Lázňe, the Johann Nepomuk Hummel International Competition in Bratislava and the International Nyiregyhazi Competition in Krakow. His repertoire includes compositions spanning from the Baroque up to the Contemporary period with more than 30 piano concertos. In 2006 he recorded his debut CD with F. Lizst´s Sonata in B minor and virtuoso transcriptions by L. Godowsky, V. Horowitz a G. Cziffra. Since then he has recorded eight more CD´s containing a very wide solo and chamber repertoire.
The Hugo Kauder Society’s mission is to foster awareness of the music composed by Hugo Kauder (1888-1972) and to support emerging musicians, aged 35 and under by offering opportunities to present, record, and in some cases premiere Kauder works. Hugo Kauder was a composer, pedagogue, and émigré to the US who defied the atonal trend of his generation with his uniquely harmonic, contrapuntal style. His output includes over 300 works covering a large variety of instruments.
