CONCERT | LUCIA PULIDO: HOMAGE TO VIOLETA PARRA & CHABUCA GRANDA

Colombian vocalist Lucia Pulido teams up with Austrian improvisers Franz Hautzinger and Martin Siewert and Afro-Peruvian guitar specialist Eric Kurimski in an homage to Chilean composer Violeta Parra and to Peruvian composer Chabuca Granda. While Violeta Parra redefined the Chilean folk song, Ms. Granda is considered a pioneer of Afro-Peruvian rhythms.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Lucía Pulido (photo by Renata Behnke), born in Colombia, is considered one of the richest voices on the international Latin American musical scene. Her work is distinguished by a distinct experimental style and the New York Times described her work as holding on “to the rawness of the original melodies while giving them a sophisticated new context.” Lucía Pulido is currently involved in several projects with musicians in New York City and Latin America. She works with her New York-based Lucía Pulido Ensemble (quintet and trio), performing traditional Latin American despecho-music and new songs written for her. She has been invited to sing and record with jazz musicians such as Ed Simon, Dave Binney, and Erik Friedlander, as well as with electronic musicians Christian Fennesz and Burkhard Stangl in Vienna.

Eric Kurimski is New York’s most sought after guitarist for Afro Peruvian music. Fusing his knowledge of Jazz with the rhythms of Peru and Latin America, Eric has dedicated himself to defining a new sound integrating the Peruvian Cajon (box) as the principal percussion instrument in a Jazz setting. He has performed in renowned venues throughout the Unites States including Blue Note, Lincoln Center, Jazz Gallery, BAM, SOB’s, Jazz Bakery, and Regatta Bar. He has also performed internationally in Europe, Peru, Mexico, Cuba, Ecuador, and Puerto Rico. He has shared the stage or recorded with Joan Baez, Marc Ribot, Oscar Stagnaro, Tania, William Luna, and many more. He has been featured in various publications including Guitar Player Magazine, All About Jazz, World Music Central, and Latin Jazz Network. His intense studies of Afro Peruvian rhythms, which began in 2002, have been influenced and mentored by the esteemed guitarist, maestro Carlos Hayre.

Vienna-based Guitarist Martin Siewert (b. 1972, Saarbrücken) is well-known as a composer and improviser in both acoustic and/or electronic contexts. He works in theater, film, and dance and has produced a number of remixes and sound installations. Siewert has perfromed with artists such as Helge Hinteregger, Wolfgang Mitterer, Elliott Sharp, and Otomo Yoshihide. He has toured and made festival appearances in several countries, including Austria, Germany, the US, Brazil, Argentina, Canada.

Franz Hautzinger (b. 1963, Saarbrücken) studied Jazz at the Art University in Graz from 1981 to 1983 until lip palsy forced him to take a six year break from trumpeting. After moving to Vienna he began to explore the trumpet in his very own and un-academic way. He played with Christoph Cech and Christian Mühlbacher, and in the Big Band “Nouvelle Cuisine” and the octet “Striped Roses”. His conscious decision to avoid electronic sound sources but to still comprehend the development of digital music on the trumpet – the quarter tone trumpet purchased in 1997 – were decisive stages for the creation of Franz Hautzinger’s sensational solo trumpet CD “Gomberg” (2000) on which he presented this new cosmos of sound that he had developed on his instrument.  He has taught at the Vienna Music University since 1989, is a member of the Berliner Ensemble “Zeitkratzer”, and has been comissioned by the likes of Klangforum and others.

This summer, Stadler will depart the ACFNY, having left a legacy of world premieres, acclaimed performances, and culturally-fulfilled audiences. The concerts comprised in the special “Director’s Cut” Series represent the breadth of musical programming Stadler brought to the ACFNY during his tenure.
