In her debut novel “From Barbie to Vibrator”, Ana Tajder introduces us to a glittering world of ambitious, self-confident and fun-loving young women. Her short, partially fictional, partially autobiographical episodes dramatize friendships, careers, sex and parties. Yet more importantly, they highlight the metamorphosis that takes place as Ana turns away from the posh life of a Barbie doll and moves towards a conscious orientation on the self – even without a “Mr. Right” in the background. Ana Tajder portrays and questions a generation that, lost in its freedoms, possibilities and chances, hastily chases mainstream media-imposed priorities. She shows that happiness takes more than financial success and attractive looks. This highly entertaining collection of short stories analyzes an entire generation, a society and, most importantly, the self.
