ACFNY SUPPORTED | CONCERT | VIENNA’S VEGETABLE ORCHESTRA First US-Tour
The Austrian Cultural Forum New York presents the US- debut of the first Vienna Vegetable Orchestra.
The ensemble plays vegetable instruments: carrots and cucumbers instead of guitars and drums. Bridging the gap between electronic music and the vegetable garden, a concert of the Vegetable Orchestra appeals to all the senses. In artistic, aesthetic, and infrastructural decisions all members of the orchestra have equal say. The members of the ensemble come from different artistic backgrounds – they are musicians, visual artists, architects, designers, media artists, writers, and sound poets. Here, the most diverse music styles fuse – from contemporary music, beat-oriented House, experimental Electronic, Free Jazz, Noise, and Dub to Clicks’n’Cuts – the musical scope of the ensemble expands consistently, and recently developed vegetable instruments and their inherent sounds often determine the direction. “Playing with food never had such interesting results. (…) the concert was truly a sensory experience towards the end when the sharp scent of celery and onion filled the venue and juices from bruised vegetables stained the performers’ attire. But this orchestra reveled in sound and as one left the concert more attuned to the aural rhythms of everyday life, it seems their devotion had paid off.” – The Strait Times, Singapore, June 10 2006
