As if it weren’t enough to master one instrument, Vienna-based Julian Rachlin is renowned for not only his exquisite violin playing, but also for his mastery of the viola. (He has become a remarkable conductor as well!)
In a pair of rare New York appearances (the first one takes place on December 5), he joins the superb pianist Itamar Golan at New York’s 92Y for a journey through Brahms’s complete works for violin and viola with piano accompaniment—a very unusual feat.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Julian Rachlin is one of the most exciting and respected violinists of our time who is also praised as a viola player and, most recently, as a conductor. For the last 23 years, he has captivated audiences with his distinctively rich sound, superb musicianship and outstanding interpretations.
This October, Mr. Rachlin will give the world premiere of a concerto for two violins, written for him by Krzysztof Penderecki, at the Vienna Musikverein. He will be joined by violinist Janine Jansen and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Mariss Jansons. In addition to 92Y, he is performing recitals at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein with his regular duo partner, pianist Itamar Golan. Last season, he opened the Philadelphia Orchestra’s season, made his debut with the Cleveland Orchestra, and appeared with the Israel and Rotterdam philharmonics, Leipzig Gewandhaus and Melbourne, Sydney and Taipei symphonies.
Always willing to expand his musical horizons, this year marks the 13th anniversary of his “Julian Rachlin & Friends” Festival, held annually in Dubrovnik, Croatia, a platform for creative and vibrant projects with today’s leading musicians and actors. Mr. Rachlin’s recordings for Sony Classical, Warner Classics and Deutsche Grammophon have all been met with great acclaim. Besides delighting his audiences with his musical performances, Mr. Rachlin is also receiving recognition as a young philanthropist for his charity work as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and for his educational outreach.
Born in Lithuania, Mr. Rachlin immigrated to Vienna with his family and studied at the Vienna Conservatory. He gained international acclaim overnight in 1988 by winning the “Young Musician of the Year” Award at the Eurovision Competition in Amsterdam. He then became the youngest soloist ever to play with the Vienna Philharmonic, making his debut under Riccardo Muti.

Pianist Itamar Golan leads a distinguished career as a chamber music performer, appearing with outstanding soloists and ensembles throughout the world. Born in Vilnius, Lithuania, his family immigrated to Israel when he was one year old. At the age of seven, he gave his first recitals, and through a scholarship awarded by the America-Israel Cultural Foundation, he continued his education in the US at the New England Conservatory in Boston. He was repeatedly awarded the American-Israel Foundation Honor Scholarship.
Mr. Golan then launched his career as a soloist and chamber pianist in the US and Israel. His fame has grown as he has established himself as a chamber musician in high demand, paired with Maxim Vengerov, Barbara Hendricks, Shlomo Mintz, Kyung Wha Chung, Vadim Repin, Tabea Zimmermann and Julian Rachlin, among others. He has toured the world as a member of a piano trio with Mr. Mintz and Matt Haimovitz. He is a frequent participant at prestigious international music festivals, including Ravenna, Tanglewood, Salzburg, Edinburgh, Ludwigsburg, Verbier and Lucerne.
Mr. Golan also plays as a soloist with the Israel and Berlin Philharmonics under conductor Zubin Mehta, and he has made a number of recordings for Deutsche Grammophon, Teldec, EMI and Sony Classical. He is currently on the staff of the Conservatoire de Paris, dividing his time between teaching chamber music, concert tours and other artistic interests, including poetry.
