The film, which is based on the autobiographical novel Der Mann mit dem Fagott by famed Austrian musician Udo Jürgens and Michaela Moritz, tells the story of Jürgens’ family as viewed against the backdrop of 20th century European history: From his banker grandfather who flees Moscow to Sweden on the eve of World War I, to his father, a small-town mayor in Austria, to Jürgens himself and his unparallelled ascent to musical stardom.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Miguel Alexandre and Udo Jürgens. This film is being screened within the framework of the exhibition Kino! 2012: New Films from Germany at the Museum of Modern Art.

Austrian singer, pianist and composer Udo Jürgens is one of the most successful musicians of German-speaking countries. His breakthrough came in 1966 when he won the competition Grand Prix d´Eurovision with “Merci Cheri”. Born as Udo Jürgen Bockelmann in 1934, he taught himself to play the piano and later studied music at the Klagenfurt Conservatory (Carinthia, Austria). His most popular songs include “Griechischer Wein” (Greek wine), “Mit 66 Jahren” (At 66), “Ich war noch niemals in New York” (I’ve never been to New York) or “Aber bitte mit Sahne” (I’ll have whipped cream with that). The musical “Ich war noch niemals in New York” contains his most successful songs and premiered in Hamburg, Germany, in 2007. He has composed more than 900 songs and sold more than 105 million records to date.
