ACFNY RECOMMENDS | HEINZ EMIGHOLZ FILM RETROSPECTIVE | SCHINDLER’S HOUSES | MALLART’S BRIDGES

Schindler’s Houses / Schindlers Häuser
Directed by Heinz Emigholz
In German and English with English Subtitles, 2007, 99 minutes, 35mm

In and around Los Angeles, the houses of Austrian-American architect Rudolf M. Schindler are as celebrated as those of Frank Lloyd Wright, with whom Schindler once worked. In this film Emigholz foregoes a narrator, and documents 40 of Schindler’s buildings by use of a stationary camera .

“I would happily rank Schindler’s Houses on the short list of essential modern movies about our city’s physical and social geography.” – Scott Foundas

Maillart’s Bridges / Maillarts Brücken
Directed by Heinz Emigholz
In German and English with English Subtitles, 1995-2000, 24 minutes, 35mm

Robert Maillart (1872–1940) revolutionized concrete-based construction. This film shows fourteen roof constructions and bridges that he designed and built.

In conjunction with an exhibition at the Goethe-Institut New York entitled The Formative Years, featuring seven early films by German filmmaker Heinz Emigholz in a site-specific video installation, the Anthology Film Archives presents seven programs surveying Emigholz’s later work, including most of the films in the Photography and Beyond series, along with the feature film The Holy Bunch. The exhibition (co-organized by the Arsenal – Institute for Film and video Art, Berlin) will take place at the Goethe-Institut’s Wyoming Building.

Heinz Emigholz, born in 1948 near Bremen, worked as an illustrator and retoucher, and later founded his own film company, Pym Films, in 1978. Since 1984, Emigholz has produced the acclaimed series of documentaries entitled Architecture as Autobiography. Exploiting a minimalist and experimental style that disavows voice-over commentary or master shots, his ever-expanding project creates a pure and detailed picture of the realm of creative spaces. Emigholz’s films provide viewers with thorough insights into the works of architectural luminaries such as Rudolf Schindler, Adolf Loos, Bruce Goff, or Louis Sullivan.

“Emigholz’s architecture films are not the kind of historical/aesthetic information overviews one might expect […]. His films are meditative and revealing, offering a surprising range of emotions.” – Doug Cunnings, filmjourney.org

Heinz Emigholz will be present to discuss and comment on his work.
