The Exhibition will take place at The New York Public Library in New York City opening on Monday, August 6 with a public reception on Saturday, October 3rd “TO THE PEOPLE OF NEW YORK – CATALOGUE RAISONNE, EXOTIC GHOST STORIES FOR ADULTS’ is dedicated to Aby Warburg and his influential Mnemosyne Atlas. On November 9th an artist dialogue will take place.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I consider the work successful when no explanation of causality or meaning can satisfy all our curiosity. The work indeed is characterized by its perpetual refusal to put any matter to rest. To redirect, to set into motion, to push. The exhibition “TO THE PEOPLE OF NEW YORK – CATALOGUE RAISONNE, EXOTIC GHOST STORIES FOR ADULTS” does not seek to propagate one particular perspective but to show the plurality of current perspective’s. The Mission of The New York Public Library is to inspire lifelong learning, advance knowledge, and strengthen our communities. The site chosen for the home of the new Public Library was the Croton Reservoir, a popular strolling place that occupied a two-block section of Fifth Avenue between 40th and 42nd Streets. The Library’s 92 locations include four research centers — focusing on the humanities and social sciences, the performing arts, black history and culture, and business and industry — and a network of neighborhood libraries throughout the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island. Throughout the system, the Library provides free and open access to its physical and electronic collections and information, as well as to its services for people of all ages, from toddlers to teens and adults. Research and circulating collections combined total more than 51 million items, among them materials for the visually impaired. In addition, each year the Library presents thousands of exhibitions and public programs, including classes in technology, literacy, researching, and English for Speakers of Other Languages. The Library serves some 18 million patrons who come through its doors annually; in addition, the Library’s website receives 32 million visits annually from more than 200 countries.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

Hermes Payrhuber is an Austrian-born artist, living and working in Bushwick, Brooklyn. His reputation of being an artist’s artist has been proven repeatedly over the last years through the acquisition of his work for many critically honored public and private collections. Payrhuber’s work has been part of many exhibitions at museums and galleries in Europe and the United States including the Museum of Contemporary Art/21er Haus Belvedere Museum, Vienna; Sue Scott Gallery, New York; Dallas Museum of Art; Kioskshop Gallery, Berlin; and James Kelly Contemporary, Sante Fe. He was awarded a grant by the Pollock-Krasner Foundation in 2008. The Museum of Modern Art, PS1 Museum invited him to present his book THINGUMMY, with a hosted book signing by Printed Matter in 2013.
