The Salzburg Marionette Theater was founded in 1913 by sculptor Anton Aicher. Its inaugural performance was Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s comic opera “Bastien and Bastienne.” The theater expanded its repertoire even during the years of WWI and included additional fairy tales for children. In 1937, The marionettes were awarded the gold medal at the World Fair in Paris. In 1952, Salzburg Marionette Theater gave its first performance in the US. In 2016, the Salzburg Marionette Theater was included in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
