ACFNY SUPPORTED | SHORT FILM SCREENING | AS YOU PASS BY

World Premiere.

The roads we erect and the cars we drive maximize our comfort and efficiency, but at what cost? As You Pass By commences an exploration of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, an infamous highway in New York City that slices through the two named boroughs. We pause in Woodside, Queens to observe one of the many spaces that have been sacrificed in order to create and maintain the utopian image of New York City on the opposite side of the East River. What we see is the beautiful way in which one New York citizen activates a seemingly derelict stretch of land.

Georg Anthony Svatek is a filmmaker with a focus on documentary and experimental cinema. Together with filmmaker Amanda Katz, Anthony has been collaborating on a documentary project about the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, an infamous urban highway in New York City. The project is made possible through funding by the New York State Council on the Arts grant program, and with support from the Austrian Cultural Forum New York City.Previously, Anthony and Amanda created a found object animation piece, Early 12 New York Song, which, among others, has screened at the Ann Arbor Film Festival, Haverhill Experimental Film Festival, and Encuentros del Otros Cine Festival International. Anthony’s creative contributions include work on Jessica Oreck’s Aatsinki: The Story of Arctic Cowboys , The Aatsinki Season, and The Vanquishing of the Witch Baba Yaga and Jose Antonio Vargas’/Ann Lupo’s Documented. Currently, Anthony freelances as an associate producer and shooter on BBC World’s Talking Movies. Born and raised in Austria, he now lives in Brooklyn, NY.

Amanda Katz uses film, photography and sound to explore and connect to her surrounding landscapes, paying special attention to the way in which the built environment frames every day life. She works professionally as a film editor and cinematographer, and currently teaches 16mm filmmaking at the Mono No Aware workshops in Brooklyn, NY. Amanda has been an assistant professor for undergraduate documentary filmmaking and urban arts courses at New York University’s New York and Paris locations. Amanda and her filmmaking partner Georg Anthony Svatek recently received funding from the New York State Council on the Arts and the Austrian Cultural Forum to complete an installment of their latest film project titled As You Pass By.
She’s shown work at The Ann Arbor Film Festival, Encuentros del Otros Cine Festival International, The Haverhill Experimental Film Festival, The Picture Show, and Microscope Gallery. Her recent professional credits include “F(l)ag Football” (Editor, directed by Seth Greenleaf / 2014) and “Your Day is My Night” (Sound Recordist, directed by Lynne Sachs / 2013).
