SYNOPSIS
The four members of the Austrian artist group Gelitin (Wolfgang Gantner, Ali Janka, Florian Reither, and Tobias Urban) have disappeared! So Salvatore Viviano, artist, art dealer, and occasional Gelitin collaborator, sets off on a cinematic search for the funniest boy group in the world, questioning artists, gallerists, and curators about the group’s possible whereabouts. His imaginary quest provides the narrative framework for Angela Christlieb’s tour de force film, which both portrays and mirrors the energy of Gelitin’s anarchic operations. Christlieb constructs her film out of a wealth of archival material, interwoven with stories and observations from various interviews. Art dealer Leo Koenig says that Gelitin’s art just makes him want to strip off his clothes, while artist Tom Sachs admits, ‘I wish my life were 10 percent more Gelitin!’
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
Angela Christlieb studied Video Art and Experimental Filmmaking at the Academy of Fine Arts of Berlin under Valie Export, Heinz Emigholz and Elfi Mikesch. In 1997, she moved to New York with an Emerging Artist grant and began working as an independent filmmaker, producing several shorts. After freelance work as a theater manager and research assistant for Anthology Film Archives and Filmmakers Coop New York, she moved back to Berlin in 2011 and began working as a writer and freelance editor for several artists and filmmakers, including Monika Treut, Heinz Emigholz, Andrew Horn. In 2007 she worked as a freelance editor and visual artist for Christoph Schlingensief’s African Twintowers. In 2009 her second feature documentary Urville premiered. Her feature documentary Naked Opera premiered at BERLINALE 2013.
