ARTIST TALK | THE SPECIAL CASE OF STEFFY GOLDNER: THE NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC’S FIRST WOMAN

We are delighted to have Gabryel Smith, Director of the New York Philharmonic Archives in conversation with Vienna-based artist Nives Widauer on their project discovering the story of the Philharmonic’s first female musician and her traveling harp case moderated by Anna Mikaela Ekstrand. This project takes place in collaboration with the New York Philharmonic’s commissioning initiative Project 19.

The New York Philharmonic is celebrating the centennial of women’s suffrage in America with Project 19, a women-only commissioning initiative. “The single largest women-only commissioning initiative in orchestral history”, as stated on the website of the New York Philharmonic. It launches with three consecutive weeks of concerts, February 5-22, conducted by Philharmonic Music Director Jaap van Zweden, each featuring a commission by one of the 19 women composers. The celebration returns in the last week of May with the performances of a commission by Austrian composer Olga Neuwirth. www.nyphil.org/project19
