In this fourth concert of the ‘In the Absence of…’ series, Austrian trumpeter and composer Franz Hackl (joined by Dave Taylor, John Clark, Gene Pritsker and Carlton Holmes) will present a program re-working and re-contextualizing the music of Austrian composer Arnold Schoenberg.

New York-based trumpeter Franz Hackl (pictured) was born in Tyrol, Austria. Growing up with traditional Austrian brass music as a soloist, he soon became interested in jazz. Hackl is an alumnus of the Conservatory of the City of Vienna and received a M.S. degree from the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied with Lew Soloff. His stylistic versatility grew to include works for full orchestra, chamber groups, choral works, and multimedia events. Hackl has been commissioned to write works for numerous international festivals and ensembles. He is founder and artistic director of the “Outreach Festival” and “Outreach Academy” and leads his own group, Franz Hackl’s IDO, which tours internationally and just completed a sold-out European tour. He is a frequent ACFNY-collaborator and has graced our stage on numerous occasions – including the building’s opening in 2002.

Dave Taylor studied at Julliard School of Music and started his career as a musician as a member of Leopold Stokowski’s American Symphony Orchestra and by performing with the New York Philharmonic under Pierre Boulez. He was a member of the Thad Jones Mel Lewis jazz band, and recorded with musicians such as Duke Ellington or The Rolling Stones. Taylor has released four solo albums and has performed numerous recitals around the world.

John Clark (born 1944 in Brooklyn, New York) is an American jazz horn player and composer. He graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music in 1973 where he studied composition and improvisation with Jaki Byard, Ran Blake, and George Russell; and horn with James Stagliano, Thomas Newell, and Paul Ingraham. He invented the “hornette”, an instrument with the same range as a French Horn but with a forward-facing bell for greater projection for which he received a patent in 1991. From 2001 to 2008 he taught at SUNY Purchase and is now on faculty at Manhattan School of Music.

Gene Pritsker (born 1971) is a Russian-born composer, guitarist, rapper, and record producer based in New York. He studied composition with Giampaolo Bracali at the Manhattan School of Music. While studying he co-founded the Absolute Ensemble with Kristjan Järvi and formed Sound Liberation. He work has been performed by the Adelaide Symphony, MDR Symphony Orchestra, Athens Camarata, Brooklyn Philharmonic, and the Berlin Philharmonic.

Born in Michigan Carlton Holmes’s musical training began at the age of eight. After studying trumpet, then drums, he picked up piano at age eleven. Carlton Holmes’ career in New York began after he completed his Masters degree at the Manhattan School of Music when he became known as one of the Young Lions. Along with extensive studio work Carlton also composed and performed for a number of film and television productions as well as Broadway. In addition to leading his own bands, Carlton’s performing and recording credit includes work with Lionel Hampton, Kenny Garrett, Max Roach, Stevie Wonder, Diane Reeves, Regina Belle, and many others. Carlton is also an active educator of piano, music theory and keyboards for all levels of students.

ABOUT THE SERIES

The series In the Absence of… creates a framework in which creative musicians conceptualize and perform a program focused on a particular canonic composer, however none of this composer’s music will be heard. This is the challenge: how to evoke presence in absence? The series also explores tradition through contemporary ears and will present Austrian musicians, music of contemporary Austrian composers performed by American ensembles, and portraits of canonic Austrian composers.

This concert is also part of the special 2013 DIRECTOR’S CUT SERIES

ACFNY’s concerts during the month of June and July have been personally curated by Andreas Stadler who has served as the institution’s director since 2007. This summer, Stadler will depart the ACFNY, having left a legacy of world premieres, acclaimed performances, and culturally-fulfilled audiences. The concerts comprised in the special “Director’s Cut” Series represent the breadth of musical programming Stadler brought to the ACFNY during his tenure.
