The Austrian Cultural Forum New York is pleased to present WILD WEST, a group exhibition commemorating the dynamic legacy of late Austrian artist Franz West (1947-2012), on view from September 20, 2017, to January 22, 2018. Curated by former West-collaborator Andreas Reiter Raabe, the show consists of works by Franz West, his New York-based contemporaries, and commissioned works by emerging artists from both New York and Austria.
In the framework of the opening, artist and curator Andreas Reiter Raabe will be in conversation with writer Alison Gingeras.
ABOUT THE PANELISTS
Alison M. Gingeras is a curator and writer based in New York and Warsaw. She has held curator positions at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the National Museum of Modern Art, Centre Pompidou, Paris, and Palazzo Grassi, Venice. In 2012, Gingeras cofounded Oko, a short-lived “curatorial laboratory” in New York’s East Village. Currently, she serves as an adjunct curator at Dallas Contemporary in Dallas, Texas in addition to working independently. In wake of the American presidential election in late 2016, Gingeras co-founded HALT Action Group-the coalition of artists, activists, and psychoanalysts behind the “Dear Ivanka” campaign. At the Centre Pompidou, she organized several notable exhibitions, including “Dear Painter, Paint Me: Painting the Figure Since Late Picabia” and “Daniel Buren Le Musee qui n’existait pas.” In 2009, she co-organized “Pop Life” at the Tate Modern with Jack Bankowsky and Catherine Wood. Most recently, she curated the two-part exhibition “The Avant-Garde Won’t Give Up: Cobra and its Legacy” at Blum & Poe in New York and Los Angeles in 2015. In September 2017, Gingeras will inaugurate a public project she organized in New York with the artists McDermott & McGough-a secular temple devoted to Oscar Wilde in collaboration with the LGBTQ Center and the West Village’s Church of the Village. The Oscar Wilde Temple will travel to Studio Voltaire in London in the fall of 2018. Last year, she organized the four-person exhibition “Blacksheep Feminism: The Art of Sexual Politics” at Dallas Contemporary which featured the groundbreaking 70s work of Joan Semmel, Anita Steckel, Betty Tompkins, and Cosey Fanni Tutti. Her forthcoming publication, Sex Work, expands upon this exhibition. Her research has served as the basis for her curatorial project at Frieze. Her writing regularly appears in such periodicals as Artforum, Tate, Etc, Mousse as well as in many artist monographs and exhibition catalogs. Her book “The Avant-Garde Won’t Give Up: Cobra and its Legacy” was just published by Prestel/Delmonico and Blum & Poe.
Andreas Reiter Raabe (born 1960 in Grieskirchen, Austria) is an artist and curator who lives and works in Vienna. In 1994, Raabe started interviewing West and publishing their interviews. From 1995 onwards he exhibited in West’s shows and collaborated with him until his death in 2012. Raabe studied Philosophy, European Ethnology as well as Painting and Graphic Arts in Vienna and is one of the founders of Gesso Artspace, a Viennese exhibition venue where he has been curating exhibitions since 2013. Reiter Raabe is also a member of the Executive Board of the Vienna Secession and has lectured at the USC Los Angeles, the University of Applied Arts Vienna, The Royal Academy of Arts, London, and The University of Art and Design Linz. As an artist, he has exhibited internationally in group and solo shows.
