The internationally award-winning Trio Callas with members from Portugal, Japan-Brazil and France, kicks off its North and South American tour in the US with a program celebrating the 150th anniversaries of two visionary composers who, though they never crossed paths during their lifetimes, reshaped the landscape of 20th-century music: the Austrian Arnold Schoenberg and the American Charles Ives. Schönberg admired Ives’ compositions, and described him as a “great man.”

About Trio Callas
Founded in 2021 by three friends who met in Mozart’s Salzburg, the Trio Callas was awarded at the FNAPEC Competition in Paris and the Bacewicz Competition in Łódź within a year of its formation. Formed by members from Portugal, Japan-Brazil, and France, the group is known for the uniqueness of its expression, born from the meeting of diverse cultural backgrounds.
The trio is regularly invited to perform its original programs throughout Europe and on tours to other continents. After its first overseas appearance in Japan in 2023, the ensemble embarks on a series of performances in the Americas in 2024.
Currently under the guidance of Cibrán Sierra Vázquez (Cuarteto Quiroga) at the Mozarteum University Salzburg, the group has worked with the Cuarteto Casals, Trio di Parma, Vienna Piano Trio, Benjamin Schmid, Connie Shih, and Thomas Riebl. They have also been mentored by Mischa Maisky, thanks to the sponsorship of the Stauffer Foundation.
In addition to performing the traditional repertoire, the trio challenges the boundaries of genre by collaborating with artists from outside classical music that they enjoy listening to. In 2023, the ensemble began a collaboration with Brazilian jazz multi-instrumentalist André Mehmari, commissioning and premiering his composition in Kitzbühel, Austria.
