JAZZ CONCERT | ALFRED VOGEL | VOGELPERSPEKTIVE

One of the most productive forces on the Austrian jazz scene, drummer Alfred Vogel brings his multi-dimensional project Vogelperspektive (a ‘bird’s eye view’ of the state of improvisation) to the US with two very different trios:  Intensivstation and Hang ‘em High.  Using elements of jazz, blues, rock, noise, and even country music, these trios, composed of some of the most dynamic improvisers in Europe, explore and explode our notions of improvisation in the 21st century.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

The drummer and percussionist Alfred Vogel (born in Vorarlberg, 1972) is often referred to as one of the most productive figures in the Austrian jazz scene. However, his sound is far too complex and diverse to be limited to only one genre. As the title “Vogelperspektive”, which may be translated as “bird’s eye view”, suggests, Alfred Vogel takes a distanced view of jazz in general as well as of his own history of playing the drums for over thirty years to create a new, universal approach to jazz sounds. All in all, a cycle of five CDs has been published to date, all of which show a mixture of improvisational and conceptual music. The last volume, Vogelperspektive 5, was released in early May. Vogel also runs his very own label Boomslang, is an organizer of the international “Bezau Beatz” Festival, which takes place annually in Austria’s westernmost province, Vorarlberg, and was nominated for this year’s BMW World Jazz Award. In November of 2011, Alfred Vogel performed at the >> Austrian Cultural Forum with pianist David Helbock.

The trio Intensivstation brings Alfred Vogel together with German John Schröder and Swiss musician Wolfgang Zwiauer. All three musicians have had personal experiences with medical intensive care units (german “Intensivstation”) at some point in their lives, they decided to give their collaboration a name that reflects the topics of life and death which are central to their music.

Guitarist and Rhodes piano player John Schröder (born in Frankfurt am Main, 1964) performed as a child before working on his first recordings in 1982. He collaborated with Joe Gallivan and participated in the bands Zuppa Romana and Der Rote Bereich performing on stages all over the world. In the following years John Schröder engaged in various other group projects including Norbert Scholly GroupFabian Gisler QuartetErdmann 3000 and LAX. He has collaborated with many notable Jazz musicans including Chet Baker, James Moody, Joe Lovano, Randy Brecker, and Christopher Dell.

After more than 20 years of performing in various bands in the Swiss jazz scene, bassist Wolfgang Zwiauer (born in Switzerland, 1973) recently founded his own collective, the Wolfpack, which comprises the artists Raphael Urweider, Salome Wieland, Lukas Mantel, and Philipp Schaufelberger.

In his second project, Hang ‘em high, Alfred Vogel performs with bassist Bond and all-rounder Lucien Dubuis. The sound they create resides somewhere between blues, jazz, soul punk and low-western-rock – which is why they named their formation after the 1968 classic Clint Eastwood Western.

The two-string slide bassist Radek Bednarz from Poland who usually goes by the name Bond is known for his unique approach to bass music. He is also the bandleader of the formations Miloopa and Fat Burning Step and collaborates with artists coming from very different genres such as Eivind Aarset, Anti Pop Consortium, Roli Mosimann, or Ganesh Anandan. Since 2004, Bond has also been running his own label, Gig Ant, which promotes alternative music culture in Poland.

Sax, bass, and contrabass clarinet player Lucien Dubuis (born in Switzerland, 1974) has released more than 20 albums. Originally hailing from the jazz and improvised music scene, he has collaborated with the likes of Marc Ribot, Hans Koch, Kalle Kalima, Linda Sharrock, and Daniel Erdmann. Dubuis has played in cities all over the world, including Montreux, Rome, Shanghai, Geneva, La Paz, and Bogotá. In 2010 he received the Culture Award from Biel/Bienne City (CH) and he was awarded the grant of the Canton of Bern for a 6-month residency in New York in 2011.
