Join us for an evening celebrating 15 years of Lucid Duo, as Austrian marimba duo Irena and Tomasz present a program tracing their artistic journey through classical arrangements, original compositions, and contemporary approaches to the marimba.
About the Concert
The program brings together original arrangements of works by Bach, Beethoven, Ravel, Schubert, and Chopin with compositions written specifically for Lucid Duo by Tomasz Goliński, alongside nature-inspired works by Keiko Abe, Balkan grooves, and Viennese waltz rhythms. From classical masterworks to contemporary works for marimba duo, the concert highlights the instrument’s sonic, expressive, and virtuosic versatility while reflecting the experiences and inspirations that have shaped the duo’s musical path.
Lucid Duo
Formed in 2011, Lucid Duo comprises Irena and Tomasz, who have dedicated their career to advancing the development of the marimba and completed Europe’s first Marimba Master’s Degree at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp. First-prize winners of the Universal Marimba Competition under the patronage of Her Majesty Queen Paola of Belgium, the duo has performed across Europe, Asia, and the Americas at renowned concert halls and international festivals, including the Shanghai Oriental Arts Center, National Concert Hall Taipei, Ginza Yamaha Hall Tokyo, and Auditorio de Tenerife.
Based in Vienna, the duo has developed a distinctive repertoire spanning classical arrangements, contemporary compositions, works for marimba duo, concertos, and works with electronics. Composer and duo member Tomasz Goliński has written numerous works specifically for the ensemble, while both musicians have collaborated with and studied alongside leading figures in the marimba world, including Japanese marimba legend Keiko Abe. In 2016, Irena and Tomasz received the Start-Stipendium from the Federal Chancellery of Austria, enabling them to specialize with Abe at the Toho Gakuen School of Music in Tokyo.
Today, they perform, teach, lecture, and serve as jury members at music institutions and international marimba academies and competitions across Europe and Asia. As Yamaha and Innovative Percussion artists, they continue to explore new possibilities for the marimba and its role on the global concert stage.
